Snake Game – from Atari to Nokia to a global phenomenon
Snake has always been a source of free gaming fun. The very first versions date back to the 1970s, appearing on home computers and early arcade machines. A version similar to what we know today was released by Atari in 1982. It then took another 15 years until Snake appeared on Nokia phones in 1997 — which triggered a true worldwide boom.
Its simple gameplay, easy accessibility, and technical innovation made Snake a hit. The concept was surprisingly straightforward: guide a snake across the field, eat fruit, and avoid collisions — with walls or yourself. Since Snake was preinstalled on nearly all Nokia phones, millions of people could play it for free every day. Because of its interactivity, Snake became a pioneer for many mobile games that followed.
After its success on Nokia phones, online Snake games began appearing in more and more variations and formats on different platforms, such as the Snake version on Spiegel Online. Smartphones then brought Snake back into the spotlight, proving once again how timeless the concept of mobile skill-based games truly is.
New platforms reinvented the classic Snake principle. It’s no surprise that Snake continues to fascinate millions of players around the world today. With Snake Multiplayer, the next generation of the classic is now here.
Not only has Snake Multiplayer been optimized for all browsers and devices, it also works across platforms. Today, you guide your snake through a colorful arena filled with numerous other players and their snakes. You no longer just collect food in the form of glowing energy balls to grow bigger — now you can upgrade your snake with various power-ups or escape from tricky situations. But one thing hasn’t changed over the decades: if you collide with a wall or another snake, the game is over. That challenge — and the simple concept behind it — remain at the heart of Snake to this day.
How to play Snake Multiplayer
The gameplay has remained the same over all these years. The goal is still to become the biggest snake on the field — while avoiding any collisions. Don’t crash into walls, and in the multiplayer version, don’t crash into the other players’ snakes either.
You grow with every energy ball you collect. In our Multiplayer Snake, you can also pick up special power-ups. These can either speed you up, give you a protective shield, or use a magnet effect to extend your radius for collecting energy balls.
If a snake collides with another or touches the boundary walls, it bursts into points or energy balls. These can then be collected by the remaining snakes. And the bigger the snake was, the more points are left behind for others to grab.
